Tragedy struck yesterday afternoon in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, when a bullion van allegedly belonging to one of the first generation banks crushed a commercial motorcyclist (Okada rider) to death.
The incident, which occurred at Oke-Ilewo axis in the highbrow business area of the metropolis, drew the ire of other okada riders, who barricaded the area with their motorcycles and for about an hour, prevented motorists from accessing the road, in solidarity with their dead colleague.
The victim, who was identified as Gbenga Okesola, was said to be a carpentry apprentice riding his brother’s motorcycle when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Eyewitness said that the bullion van dragged Okesola’s body for over 20 metres before halting to enable sympathisers remove the corpse and the motorcycle.
The gory scene of the okada man’s corpse, however, sparked off a nearviolent reaction from other commercial motorcyclists, who were ready to attack any vehicle in sight.
